Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer include support for creating a new web browser window when clicking on a hypertext link in an HTML document. This feature allows the author of an HTML document to force the creation of a new window to display a specific web page. There may be situations where a user may wish to display a web page in a new window, but automatically creating new windows can confuse users and clutter their desktop. The most confusing part about new windows is that the newly created window does not provide an easy way for the user go back to the web page that created the window. In order to find the previous web page the user must manually find the correct window on their desktop.
Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer provide the user with functionality to create a new window when needed. This is typically done by selecting a "New Window..." menu option. Since users already have the ability to create new windows, and automatically creating windows can be confusing, users should have the ability to disable automatic window creation.
